This holiday season may play out a bit differently that you had planned. That doesn’t mean that you can’t find a way to welcome more gratitude into your life and your imagination. Poetry is a great way to bring awareness front and center to a topic, feeling, or thought, especially gratitude. Like gratitude, poems feel swift and assured; they seem to capture a purer or higher awareness about the world — even if their language or form might be a little confusing.
If you’re feeling out of sorts this holiday season, poems are the perfect thing to read when you’re trying to better your gratitude-showing skills because they prompt us, as readers, to see the world more fully. Being present and aware in the moment helps us be thankful. Poems are also — sometimes — often small. Let us share with you a poem, we collectively wrote in the office, our focus was to pass the gratitude we feel for our supporters, readers, clients, and loved ones through the language of poetry.
We Are A Grateful One
As long as we remember to be kind to ourselves. It is something so simple yet so rare.
Every day when we wake up there are already 1001 things going through our heads.
Things that seem essential.
What is essential is invisible to the eye. What’s really essential is that we are kind
And we are gentle, to ourselves and our minds.
We are complex beings who can
Discover,
Create
And invent
But we also need to love and be loved, to care and be cared for.
Without all of the above we cannot become our greatest selves.
We have to make room for self love,
Forget about catching up with work emails. Or answering your work phone.
This world is turning into one huge technological machine and we are turning into the cogs.
We cannot limit the excitement and joy just so the cogs turn and the machine works.
There has to come a time where the most important thing is you,
Us,
Them,
We.
Put down your phone, shut your laptop,
Open your curtains, and look,
The stars
They are so beautiful,
They shine despite the fact they are passed.
Their light shines to give us hope, to help us dream,
Please look.
Now wait,
The stars have faded,
But now the sun appears.
Stop what you are doing and listen.
The birds are singing. Can’t you hear?
But if you listen,
Really listen,
The birds,
They are always singing.
I know the cogs have to turn. And the machine has to work but how wonderful
To be able to stop
Look,
And listen.
The Universe is here just for you.
Poems are necessary because they honor the unknown, both in us and in the world. They come from the unknown, they are shaped into form by the power of language, and set free to fly with wings of images and metaphor. If you’re like us, you no doubt, have discovered that poetry is a vessel which can carry you to a place forgotten, hidden, or waiting just for the right time to be seen and shared. We thank you all so much for your continued support, and remember, look within to explore outward.
